GETTING STARTED

The Provisional Licence

All you need to get started on your driving career is a Provisional Driving Licence. To get this you will need to complete Form D1 which is available at any Post Office. Alternatively you can apply online at www.direct.gov.uk. Once you have received your Provisional Driving Licence your driving lessons can begin.

When I feel you are ready, I will advise you to apply for the two tests (theory and practical) that you are required to pass before you qualify for your Full UK Driving Licence, which will allow you to drive unaccompanied on public roads.

Theory Test and Hazard Perception Test

I will give advice and support on preparing for, and applying for, your theory test and hazard perception test.

The theory test is a Highway Code based knowledge test taken on a computer using touch-screen technology. It consists of 50 questions of which you must answer 43 correctly within the 57 minutes maximum time.

The hazard perception test follows immediately after the theory test and is also delivered on a computer. You will be presented with a series of 14 video clips which feature everyday road scenes. In each clip there will be at least one developing hazard, but one of the clips will feature two developing hazards. The student responds by clicking a button on the mouse as each hazard develops. The earlier you see the hazard and respond to it the higher the mark for that video clip. The maximum score for each hazard is 5, and students must score an overall 44 out of 75 to pass the test.

Success in both parts of the theory test allows you to apply for the Practical Test.

Again, I will guide you through the application and booking process. This is to ensure that you are both ready for your test, and that myself and the training vehicle are available for you to use on your driving test.

The Practical Driving Test

The practical driving test lasts approximately 40 minutes and will include:

an eyesight check
two questions about simple car maintenance
two manoeuvres from:

  • turn in the road
  • reverse around a corner
  • parallel parking
  • bay parking

Throughout the test pupils must demonstrate the safe driving skills that they have been taught during their lessons.
